Viewing by month: April 2011

May 2, 2011 Program

Cooperstown Rotarian Jim Kevlin, publisher of The Freeman's Journal and Hometown Oneonta, introduced his weekly newspapers to Morris Rotarians.  Kevlin moved to the area about five years ago when The Freeman's Journal became available.  He keeps the two-section paper, now completely computerized, filled with articles on local happenings and upcoming events. It is one of two paid weeklies serving the Cooperstown area.

After the two-centuries-old Freeman's Journal was firmly on its feet again, Kevlin and his small team looked to Oneonta as the target for a second weekly newspaper.  Complimentary copies of Hometown Oneonta are mailed to all homes in the city of Oneonta and are distributed free through area newstands.  Again, the paper doesn't avoid controvery but is primarily dedicated to the positive happenings of the community.  The second section of both papers is devoted to Otsego County news and carries the title of AllOtsego.life

As for the future, Kevlin says the newspapers will continue to be published in their current print format.  Breaking news is likely to be left to the "real-time" advantages of the company's website.  You're likely to see reporters dedicated to the villages along routes 7, 20 and 51. You can follow the progress of Kevlin's venture at his website www.allotsego.com.

Cleaner Highways

For the past decade, teams from the Morris Rotary Club have picked up litter along the highways entering the Village of Morris.  Sections of Route 51 both North and South of town and Route 23 East of the village are cleaner following the recent late-April workday. One crew included (from left): Ron Hay, Jeff Conroe, Chase Miller, and organizer Roger Miller.  Another crew was headed by Mike D'Amico and student members of the MCS track team.
